When you start a hangout a post will appear in your stream but, the post will only be shared with the people who were invited to the hangout.

Since sometimes reading "lol" doesn't deliver the same punch as actually hearing your friend laugh at your jokes, you can now use voice and video chat capabilities in your Google Chat properties (i.e. From within these services, you can have an actual conversation with someone (seriously, out loud) or even chat face to face over video chat.

This is what you'll need to get started: If your friend doesn't have a camera next to their name in your chat list, you can invite them to download the plug-in from the More menu in a chat window.

If your contact has a camera icon next to their name in your Chat list, you can start a voice call with them.

Simply select your contact from the chat list and in the Chat window that appears click the phone icon.

If you’re using Chat in Gmail, Chrome OS, or Google+ you can start Hangouts directly from the Chat window.

If you don’t have a Google+ account you can start or join a limited hangout, which only includes the option to hang out with 1 other person.
